It used to be a real pain to try and get google calendar working with kontact/korganiser, however now it is very simple. I have also provided a screenshot walk-through to aide the process.
Just install akonadi-kde-resource-googledata using your package manager or in the terminal with:
sudo apt-get install akonadi-kde-resource-googledata
This will install support of google calendar and google contacts into akonadi. If you’ve not heard of akonadi before, it is a backend that manages communications and protocols. So rather than having developers of separate applications working on the same thing rewriting code that does the same thing they can simply plug into akonadi. Kontact/korganiser can load can load from an akonadi resource:
Walkthrough
(see below for walkthough with screenshots)
- Right Click on calendars and click add resource
- Select akonadi
- Click Manage Calendar Sources
- Click add
- Select Akonadi Google Calendar Resource
- Enter your email and password and select ok
- Your calendar should now sync and appear in korganiser

I have done the very same but Akonadi still seems a wee bit buggy. It sometimes does not start properly for no obvious reason, restarting with “akonadictl restart” solves the problem, yet annoying.
Furthermore, the google calandar akonadi resource does not seem to support categories. They do not synchronise across computers. Thunderbird Lightning does support it though despite the fact that you will not find categories in google calendar itself.
One thing that is extremely annoying is the fact that google calendar does not support tasks. Well kinda, it supports it for itself, but apparently not for access to external programs. Or just noone yet programmed that into any connectors?
@Ingo Ratsdorf Yeah the main annoyance I have with it is that it doesn’t support recurrences of events. These are problems with libgcal and have bug reports filed for them already hopefully this means that it will be fixed soon 🙂

I’ve followed the instructions and appear to have been able to sync both the calendar and the contacts. However, when composing a new message, I am unable to select contacts from the address book. Any thoughts?
Still missing support for more than one Google Calendar. I mean this akonadi-kde-resource-googledata syncs only the default calendar, but not any of the other ones.
Hi,
Works fine, but kontact now uses 250MB of memory as does akonadilibgcal, so this is half the memory on my system. I have a lot of entries, over the last six years, but this seems over the top!
